Thousand Oaks, CA — January 8, 2012 — Chuck Trunks' Surfboard Art will be displayed at the Discovery Center in Thousand Oaks through February 20th.

SURFBOARD SALES TO BENEFIT THE VENTURA COUNTY SURFRIDER FOUNDATION.

In December The Discovery Center for Science and Technology opened its Tinkering Zone, a variety of hands-on activities that encourage creativity and problem-solving through construction and scientific exploration. Open on weekends and by appointment through February 20, The Discovery Center is the perfect place to play and learn as a family or with friends.

In “The Zone” guests can build scribbling machines (using recycled materials and mini motors) that jiggle around the table creating unique pieces of art. Design aficionados can form one-of-a-kind jewelry pieces or objects of art using assorted bling, LED lights, and scrap materials. Those interested in flight can build flying machines, then test them in a wind tunnel to see how long they stay in flight or how high they fly.

Visitors can design their own marble machines, creating paths for marbles to travel through channels, down ramps, and around obstacles to meet suggested challenges, like “How Slow Can You Make Your Marble Go?”

What can you do with 10,000 building blocks that are all exactly the same shape and size? Come and find out! The Discovery Center recently invested in Citiblocs, high quality wooden construction blocks cut from renewable forests in New Zealand. “Citiblocs require no glue, no snaps, no connectors and no magnets: just gravity, balance and imagination.” Imagination is a jumping off point and critical component of creative problem solving and abstract thinking. “Today kids are sealed in a silicon bubble. They don’t know how anything works,” states Frank Keil, a Yale University psychologist, in a blog by science journalist, Anne Murphy Paul.

“Research in the science of learning shows that hands-on building projects help young people conceptualize ideas and understand issues in greater depth,” states Murphy Paul, in her blog article titled “In Praise of Tinkering.”

In addition to all the fun tinkering exhibits on the museum floor, The Discovery Center is thrilled to be able to display the creative work of local artist and scientist, Chuck Trunks. “Trunk’s colorful surfboard art pieces reflect the kind of out of the box creativity that we value. His pop-art, brightly hued pieces take inspiration from his work in biology, the corporate world, and the natural beauty of Ventura County,” stated DC President, Carrie Glicksteen. “He takes well-used surfboards that would normally be discarded and turns them not only into beautiful wall art, but prepares them for a second life in the ocean; recycling at its best!” Trunks states, "The ocean is responsible for so much art inspiration - why not create art that 'goes back' to the ocean?"

Tinkering activities are recommended for children age 6 and up. Special programs will be available for younger children and their parents. The Tinkering Zone is not just for kids! Teens and adults will have just as much fun as the kids if they dare to jump into the creative fun. There are no rights or wrongs here… just a chance to build, design, create, learn, share and have a great time with friends or family.

The Discovery Center is a resource for personal exploration of science and technology for people in all stages of life. The center seeks to empower individuals as problem-solvers and innovators enabling them to respond to issues that shape their lives and impact their world. Tinkering, building structures with a variety of materials, messing around with squishy circuits and gooey Oobleck give people the kind of direct experience they need to build their own conceptual understanding of how things work.

“Tinkering is a great way to exercise the muscles of patience and tenacity while expanding our capacity to solve problems creatively,” said Carrie Glicksteen, president of The Discovery Center for Science and Technology. “We believe in this engaging self-directed type of learning because it is motivating, authentic, and effective in helping people understand how things work and develop confidence in their own abilities.”

The exhibit, located at 43 W. Thousand Oaks Boulevard, next to Big 5, will run through February 20, 2012. Hours are 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Admission is $5 per person. TRUNKS' Beam-Me-Up was one of the sold works that benefitted the non-profit Vita Art Center in Ventura!

Ventura, CA — December 20, 2011 — Dozens of well-known and emerging local artists sold their creative efforts for a fundraiser benefitting the Vita Art Center, a West Ventura teaching facility which offers local youth a safe and nurturing environment during their least structured and therefore highest-risk times: after school, on weekends, and during the summer months.

Called the "Anonymous" exhibition, the December 2nd event featured 12-inch-by-12-inch canvasses. The paintings were exhibited anonymously with the artists signing the back of their paintings.

"Visitors collected art without knowing who the artist was until after they purchased the piece," said Vita Art Center Founder Mary Perez. "The fun is for visitors to collect work they like and maybe pick out a favorite artist's work or collect a new artist."This was the third year of the annual "Anonymous" exhibition. "It's our biggest fundraiser of the year," Perez said. "Last year we sponsored hundreds of youths in our art programs, totaling more than $14,000 in scholarships to families with financial need."

All Vita Art Center classes are taught by local artists. "Not only do we help youth, we create jobs for local artists," Perez added.

The Vita Art Center, located at 432 Ventura Ave. Studio 30, in the Bell Arts Factory, offers consistent, quality art education and mentoring which impacts social development, academic achievement, and vocational opportunities for youth and teens. Studies show that when youth have substantial engagements with the arts they are more likely to go to college, get good grades, obtain a degree and to hold a full-time job. The facility is an educational not for-profit organization under the sponsorship of Bell Arts Factory, a 501 (c) 3 non-profit organization. Contributions to the Vita Art Center are fully tax-deductible to the extent provided by law.

MAKING A SPLASH: SALES OF ART DECORATED SURFBOARDS TO BENEFIT OCEANS.

Hang it on a wall or hang ten on it across the face of a wave, a surfboard with brightly colored designs created by Camarillo pop artist Chuck Trunks is an eyeful, wet or dry.

Trunks used his distinctive, highly colorized artistic style to create surfboards that will be on display at the Photon Gallery in Ventura, just in time for Ventura’s Winter Wine Walk throughout downtown Ventura on Main Street tomorrow night.

Trunks first displayed his surfboard art last summer in Ventura County Museum of Art’s Splash Show.

The response was so positive that Trunks, a full-time artist, decided to use the surfboards as a way to give to charity.

Trunks said he plans to donate 20 percent of each board’s proceeds to Surfrider Foundation, a San Clemente- based nonprofit that protects oceans from pollution.

“The ocean is responsible for so much art inspiration,” Trunks said. “So I thought, why not create art that goes back to the ocean?”

Mds Surfboards in Newbury Park donates used surfboards to Trunks.

To prep the surfboard for his art, Trunks spends a day stripping the board of wax, dirt and stickers. He then prints his artwork on high-quality heavy vinyl with adhesive and lays it by hand on one side of the board. He leaves the sides and back of the board exposed to show the board has been used. Trunks said the shiny vinyl pairs well with the rough and tumbled board.

“The vinyl is super shiny and looks like wet candy,” Trunks said. “I intentionally leave the side untouched because I like the beaten look, like it has had a life. The art is now the board’s second life. There’s a real wow factor.”

The vinyl is sturdy, Trunks said, but can be removed if the board owner wants to change the design for something new.

Trunks said an owner can treat the vinyl-covered board like any surfboard and can surf on it, put wax on it and leave it outside. If the board is regularly being surfed on, the vinyl will last about four years.

“ I’ve never seen artwork like this, and it has a great vibe to it,” said Matt Sparks, owner of Mds Surfboards. “It fits a beach community because all his colors are bright and express happiness.”

Surfboards range in price from $ 200 to $ 400. To buy Trunks’ artwork as a print costs between $600 and $900. Trunks said he can also create custom artwork for a client.

“I think putting his art on surfboards was something very neat because it’s unique,” said Peter Duffey, owner of Photon Gallery. “It speaks to the people because it’s very Venturaesque.”

Trunks’ surfboards will be on display at the Photon Gallery, 522 E. Santa Clara St. in downtown Ventura, through the month of December. The gallery will be part of the Ventura Winter Wine Walk tomorrow from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m.

“We’re driven by the ocean because we live right beside it, and it brings us activities, food and family time,” Trunks said. “It has a certain place in people’s hearts. It’s part of our culture here. These surfboards are a gift back to the ocean.”

"Twenty Twelve" is the latest creation in the TRUNKS ART series, "This End Up!"

Camarillo, CA — December 5, 2011 — If you ever eavesdropped on a few of my conversations with friends as I held court in the local Panda Express, you probably overheard my disdain towards calendar dates telling me what to do, how to act and what to feel. December 21, 2012 is a date I first heard about when I was in grade school. When Sister Mary Catherine told me that this date signaled the end of a 5,125 year cycle in the Mayan calendar and that our sun would finally align with the Milky Way galaxy, all I could think about was how old I’d be.

As the years rolled by, the impending ‘galactic alignment’ didn’t interest me much at all. Things like awkward high school dances, perfecting my Frisbee throw in college, satisfying unrealistic corporate deadlines and avoiding the American healthcare system always seemed WAY more important than the notion that a cataclysmic demise awaited all human kind. Now that I swapped a conference room for an art studio, a composition about December 21, 2012 seemed like a good idea. After a little research, I found that we’ve been able to read the Mayan calendar for over 100 years and that the corresponding hieroglyphics have been completely deciphered for about 30 years. What’s it all mean? From what I gathered, it means nothing more than hitting a giant, cosmic reset button.

“Twenty Twelve” is my tribute to this historic date. While the temples and dragons offer a nod toward the Mayan culture, the sun dials and Stonehenge refer to the cleverness of those ancient civilizations that linked celestial movements to time. But as for the magic eight balls and surfer dudes – well that’s just my way of telling Sister Mary Catherine that even though December 21, 2012 will pique the interest of the spiritual and scientific, it’s still just another random day to do what you love and to share it with those around you. I hope you like my latest composition!

Ventura's Photon Gallery will be showing TRUNKS ART Surfboards during the Winter Wine Walk THIS Saturday!

Ventura, CA — Decemberber 1, 2011 — The Photon Gallery will not only be one of the tasting locations during Ventura's Winter Wine Walk on Saturday, December 3rd, owners Peter and Karen Duffy will be showing my surfboard art from 4 to 8pm. The Photon Gallery is located at 522 East Santa Clara Street (one block East of California Street) in downtown Ventura.

The Ventura Winter Wine Walk is coming back to beautiful downtown Ventura on December 3, 2011 from 11am-8pm. The day will kick off with the Holiday Street Fair starting at 11am on the 400 and 500 block of Main Street with holiday vendors and live entertainment. This street fair and entertainment is free and open to the public starting at 11am.

At 4pm, the Ventura Winter Wine Walk gets started! The wine walk will showcase world class wineries in your favorite downtown businesses. Guests will receive 12 sampling tickets (good for (1) sample of wine up to 2 ounces). Each guest will also receive a map of the participating tasting sites in downtown Ventura. Each tasting site will have a designated area set up for wine walk guests along with entertainment and of course amazing wines!

As guests stroll down Main St. they will be surrounded with a winter holiday ambiance of live jazz and blues entertainment, beautiful lighting downtown and snow fall from 6:45-8pm.

Camarillo, CA — October 11, 2011 — I can still remember walking the half mile from my house to Pie In The Sky, a small walk-up pizzeria that barely had room for the two arcade games let alone the cramped two-seater for waiting customers. The year was 1975 and the walk was always exciting because the two quarters in my pocket would keep me and my best friend J.J. busy for at least an hour or until the owner of the place would run us out for hogging up PacMan and Space Invaders. Back then, it was all about the pride you’d feel after getting your initials into the top ten list. Today, I’m pretty sure you won’t find a “CJT” on any of today’s machines but you just might find my pop art imagery on your Wii controller or X-Box!

The historical component of the exhibit contrasts early 20th century beach wear with today’s trends, explores 1960s surf culture, and offers a look back at Ventura’s former Bath House, unique “Tent City” and Pierpont Bay resort.

The 'SPLASH!' exhibit at the Ventura County Museum of Art opens this Friday, July 1st!

I had just started a new art piece when I came upon a doodle by one of the very few 5 year olds that cross my path. The piece of dark blue construction paper contained the makings of a heart, a Christmas tree and two cats; but it was the light blue snowman that caught my eye. Baby Warhol? No. Cool class work of an animated preschooler? Absolutely. “Snow Daze” was inspired by the creativity of a mind unencumbered by rules, judgment or circumstance and represents the walls we put up long after leaving those tiny classroom chairs far behind. And when it comes time to step outside those walls - sometimes we leave on our own – other times it takes an unexpected shove.

A CHANGE FOR THE BETTER: FOR SOME WORKING PROFESSIONALS, THE CAREER PATH HAS MANY TURNS TO CONSIDER

A new year often inspires new beginnings, but when it comes to changing careers, several factors should be considered before jumping ship, says Dr. Christine Cicone, a clinical psychologist in Westlake Village, CA who's helped guide numerous clients through the process. Naturally, financial risk needs to be taken into account, including the cost (and time) for additional training or education, if required. Awareness that daily routines will change is another consideration; and to prevent future disillusionment or burnout, Cicone advises that "a career change should be about what you enjoy doing rather than just what you're good at."

It's also helpful to reframe negative thoughts: "Making a switch can be tough at first because you're basically starting over. But you're not going backward, you're going on a different path," Cicone says. Even positive change is change, she cautions: "Many feel a loss of the familiar and wonder why they aren't immediately happy. It's normal to feel that way, but focus on the new opportunities. Remind yourself that you're in a better place."

Switching careers midstream didn't necessarily come easy for any of the following people, but the risks they took and the obstacles they overcame have brought them to places they once only dreamed about.

FROM SCIENCE TO SURFBOARD SKINS

During his Irish Catholic upbringing in Philadelphia, Chuck Trunks' career expectations were made perfectly clear to him by his parents: "It was math or science - pick one." And so, even though he was known as an "art guy" in high school, Trunks went on to study molecular biology and wound up at Amgen as a genetic engineer and later, due to his skills in explaining complexities, he became a business analyst with the company. "I made flow charts, business models, even storyboards to break things down in an understandable manner."

After placing art on the back burner for 20 years, Trunks, now of Camarillo, finally decided it deserved priority and became a full-time artist in 2006. When he was dismissed by a number of galleries during attempts to present his portfolio, Trunks sought out companies that use art on products. Soon he landed gigs designing skins for surfboards and cell phones. He also entered a tequila bottle-label contest that helped put his name on the map. "I quickly discovered you have to be willing to reinvent yourself when starting over."

Today, as the creator of colorful abstracts representing positive images, Trunks says he hasn't been able to get rid of his analytical side. "I'm compelled to build messages into my art about the fundamental truths, like the difficulty of rebuilding relationships, careers, or life in general. Not everyone will notice the messages, but they're there."

I have to admit it. I'm continuously fascinated and inspired by the over-caffeinated, over-achieving multi-taskers who begin their days with 70 mile-per-hour conference calls. It's all relative I guess. To the ones zooming by my bicycle, I'm sure I look like a pot-smoking, under-achieving loser (or commercial pop artist). In the end, we all choose the pace at which we want to live our lives. For those of you complaining that your life is out of control, I say turn off your smart phone, ease up on the gas pedal and move out of the fast lane – just watch out for cyclists when you do!

Don’t order the lobster
When it comes to the business of art, Trunks tackles it with the same precision as his line renderings. He is refreshingly unapologetic about making a lucrative career in art, and draws a clear working ethic for himself and for those he associates with. Trunks expects only the utmost respect from business partnerships. “It’s like the first date,” he explains. “She’s 20 minutes late, but you give her the benefit of the doubt. But then if she takes her phone out, orders the lobster — well, that benefit is lost. Same in business — if you tell me that you’ve sent the contract and it’s not true, well, you’re ordering the lobster.”

No shortcut to quality
Each painting takes at least five weeks to complete. Trunks enjoys the subtle deception they lend as they appear to be computer generated. “I like it when people discover that they’re entirely hand-painted,” he says. The work requires closer inspection to reveal the evidence of the artist’s hand. The exultant acrylic and ink paintings burst with intense color and elaborate compositions yet are contained by the precision of his lines. “I like it neat,” offers Trunks. Comparable to comic book imagery, Trunks’ harlequin pictorials begin with a black and white “skeleton” of hand-rendered yet surprisingly meticulous lines. “I think of color afterwards,”

Weird science
Trunks spent most of his scientific career at Amgen. “I was an OK scientist,” he confesses about his career in the biotech industry. During a 20-year period in the corporate world, Trunks’ extremely analytical understanding of science became a key element for his transition into the art world. Trunks utilized his own graphics as a means to translate his clear understating of scientific law into visual interpretations easily readable by the business executives he worked with. Thus, he became the connection between science and business through imagery.

Giclée is OK
Delving in all aspects of art promotion, marketing and licensing, Trunks treats his art as serious business. “I approach this business with confidence, with the wish to create a partnership,” he says. He uses the same systematic approach with his appointment book that he does with his painting technique, and rejects the romanticized notion of the starving artist by capitalizing on the reproduction and licensing of his original paintings.

Luck of the draw
The quote from Thomas Jefferson, “The harder I work, the more luck I have,” unequivocally rings true in Trunks’ case, as serendipitous experiences and lucky encounters lead not only to solid opportunities for exposure and growth, but to continuous bouts of inspiration and encouragement. Unintentionally holding a 20-minute conversation with iconic American pop artist Peter Max or swimming in a pool, on a cruise ship, covered with the work of Brazilian-born artist Romero Britto — both of whom share Trunks’ uplifting imagery, bold compositions and use of vibrant colors — would certainly be attributed to luck by many. But Trunks is deeply conscious that this serendipity is accompanied by methodical and consistent hard work.

If you’ve read a few of my other abstracts, you’re probably thinking that I’ve created an image that cleverly embodies the various blissful (and not so blissful) gyrations of the endangered committed relationship. As an artist with a distinctive style, I sometimes wish I could 'Trunksify' an ad, logo, a famous painting...etc. Well, I finally got my chance. The best way to tell you how this opportunity came about, I'll let you read what the founder and CEO of the Conejo Valley Guide had to say in his May 28, 2010 blog:

As a social media minimalist, I was surprised to find myself on a website that provided a glossary of Twitter terms – better known as a ‘twittonary.’ After carefully reading through the definitions, I figure I’m somewhere between ‘twittphilia’ (an obsession with all things Twitter) and ‘twittanoia’ (an intense aversion to Twitter). And I’ve never personally experienced ‘twittphoria’ (the elation one feels when the person you’ve added decides to follow you back) or ‘twittilation’ (um…you can figure that one out for yourself). So when I saw that ‘twurfer’ wasn’t on the list (or on any other list), I decided to come up with my own definition (any wave rider willing to tweet surf conditions between sets) as well as create an image surrounding the ‘twurfer dude.’

I’m not exactly sure when it happened – when I went straight from thinking, “Are you kidding me?” to mouthing the words, “Beam Me Up!” I mean, I didn’t even get to experience the slightly less cynical “Take me with you!” stage. What’s that you ask? What am I even talking about? Oh, I’m sorry. You’re not familiar with the classic social evolution of sensitive artists (my bad). Fortunately, I have a nice summary for you:

Stage 1 – “Are you kidding me?!” – One becomes aware of surrounding morons.

Stage 2 – “Take me with you!” – One begins to cling to the less moronic.

Stage 3 – “Beam Me Up!” – One finally realizes that they are utterly alone on this planet.

Even though the mother ship hasn’t responded to my persistent calls for rescue (sigh), I’m ready when they’re ready but the best of what I’ve experienced will be neatly packed in my carry-on.

TRUNKS ART: I love this frame job on "Perfect Match!"

Sometimes my customers are more creative than me - especially when it comes to clever framing. This particular customer has a nice collection of 4 of my pieces which brighten up a simple yet comfortable business office. About a month ago, she invited me over to see her newly framed, "Perfect Match" and I was blown away by how nicely she had it framed. Does the purple inner frame make this pop art piece pop even more or what? This 20x16 reproduction of "Perfect Match" was printed on bamboo paper so it's a lot less expensive than canvas reproductions - and in some cases - they can even look better!

For some reason, my mind has been mulling over the phrase, 'coming of age' for the last month or so. I think it's because I read those words on so many DVD jackets while doing some holiday browsing in my local video store. I like those kinds of movies. Besides the formulaic 'nerd boy wins affections of popular girl' or 'klutz scores improbable touchdown to win the game,' these movies always come with a soundtrack that magically romanticizes what many of us experienced as awkward, angst-filled times. Yet, the movie studios are only doing what we do to ourselves!

If you're like me, every time I hear a particular song from the 80's, my mind always pin points my exact location in time when that song was either streaming out of my boom box or my buddy's '64 VW bug or from some huge speakers in my favorite dive bar. "80's Knight" simply pays tribute to those bands that will forever be the soundtrack of my own 'coming of age' story.

How could you bounce this guy out of your party?! "Party Crasher" is the latest from TRUNKS ART's 'A-Okay Series!'

When I set out to create the party crasher character, I had planned on producing a really cool peacock. So how come my party crasher looks more like the "malibu chicken?" At first I was like, "man…this is one lame peacock" but instead of tossing this first attempt, I ended up developing it into what you see here because the more I looked at this little guy – the more out of place he looked. And the more out of place he looked, the more he WAS my "Party Crasher!"

I think all of us from time to time can feel like the party crasher. Even with having an invitation in your pocket, a drink in your hand and friends within back slapping distance, a rock'in fun evening can surprise the best of us with those momentary thoughts that question why we're even here and doubts that makes us feel more like an outsider than a relished invitee. Does that mean it's time to grab your date and leave the barn? Relax. That girl over by the chicken coop is thinking the same thing. And so is that pig in the corner. So have another drink, take in the music and just know that deep down – we're all "Party Crashers!"

I can't believe I'm going to admit this but I actually think the only way to meet someone these days is to do it over the internet. I know…that sounds totally weak! But what's the alternative? Loitering around Trader Joe's? Trolling local wine festivals? Believe me, you'll hear a stern "Sir, is there something I can help you with?" way before hearing a fantasy like, "You're right. These tomatoes really do look outstanding. Can I give you my number?" Yeah, right!

Whether meeting someone on-line, in a dog park or at a backyard barbecue, the same pitfalls await the uninitiated within any budding courtship. In this composition, I tried to convey the biggest stumbling block of all – not being honest about who you really are. Are the two gushing corporate types revealing their true selves or are we merely seeing how they make each other feel at the moment? I'm going to take the high road on this one and say they're a "Perfect Match."

Despite sounding like a disguised tribute to my favorite Jack Black movie, "Skull of Rock" is a composition that captures my favorite things to do in L.A. around Halloween – activities I could never do growing up in suburban Philadelphia. With the summer heat lasting deep into the Fall and kids packed into classrooms, I’m free to climb rocks around "Skull Rock" in Joshua Tree National Park and to enjoy near empty beaches with a boogie board strapped to my wrist!

Even after 20 years, I still miss the spectacular autumns of the North East, but listening to the sounds of desert silence and sharing waves with dolphins and seals more than makes up for it! Happy Halloween!

You’d think I wouldn’t need to stand in line at Starbucks after two hours of early morning boogie boarding but that’s what I end up doing every time I go to Malibu. What’s up with that? Frigid rip tides and punishing surf aren’t enough of a jolt to wake me up?! Or maybe it’s my pathetic, subconscious need to spot incognito (and not so incognito) celebs standing in this painfully slow line with me? In any case, the soul-crushing wait allows me to indulge my keen eye and to ponder the subject of my next art composition.

“Morning Buzz” is what happens when a perfectly good subject (like coffee) gets influenced by a recent trip to some place other than a beach. Remember the spinning tea cups at Disneyland? Even with such an iconic reference, this piece offers an approving nod to all those who not only start their day with a hot cup of coffee but with the thought that it’s going to be a great day.

'Just Peachy' gets an 80's make-over!

I was recently asked to create a retro piece depicting an 80's activity - and what could be more 80's than roller skating? I (like totally) hope you fancy this make-over of "Just Peachy" - to the max of course! Here's the story behind this creation:

“I want my MTVVVVV….” Back in the eighties, teenage distractions consisted of things like Pac-Man, Rubik’s Cubes and of course – MTV. Fascinating stuff at the time but not addicting enough to have driven us into the abyss like we’re seeing with so many of today’s kids – but to be fair, we didn’t have Play Stations, Twitter pages or YouTube. We couldn’t even…gulp…text each other!

“Just Peachy” is about how all these distractions, though fun, can lead to an unpreparedness when it comes time to focus on achieving independence. With such a harsh wake-up call looming around the corner, will she be able to overcome the pull of the rabbit hole? Chances are she will. If we managed to get somewhere in life, so will she – even if MTV is now a podcast download.

I hope you like the changes I made on my website. I didn't go crazy or anything since I still like the format and overall structure. Mainly, the changes were focused on the home page to improve navigation; but, I did manage to add a new licensing page and a publications link on the about Chuck page. Even the art products page has updated information. Lastly, I added thumbnails to the press page so it functions similarly to the photos page. That's basically it. Even though the changes were relatively small, this kind of programming work can be pretty tough - that's why I still work with my original webmaster, Andrew Howell, owner of A to Z Studio. Ventura Family YMCA adds "RACE DAY" to its' newly renovated Teen Center!

I guess timing is everything. I pretty much finished "Race Day" right about the same time that the Ventura Family YMCA was putting its' own finishing touches on their newly renovated Teen and Childcare Center. Since the colors, mood and theme of this piece matched up with what the YMCA was looking for, all I had to do was create an extra large reproduction and customize it per Jacob Munyon, Director of Childcare Services. The best part of doing this for the Ventura YMCA was delivering the piece to such a friendly group. Despite functioning as fast-paced as a supermarket right after an earthquake tremor, the YMCA is staffed by people who have as much fun as the members who go in and out of a lobby area that could double as a rush hour subway platform! Seriously though, the facility may be busy but it's highly organized. And as for the staff, they're welcoming and willing to earn your patronage.

New TRUNKS ART Release: "Wine Boggling!"

Is it me? Or is it more stressful to buy wine than mutual funds? I started thinking about this when I noticed that my mouse will hover over the 'buy fund button' on my broker's web page for about 3 minutes versus the 30 minutes or so I spend in the wine aisle trying to decide what I'm going to bring to the dinner party. Choose the wrong mutual fund and you'll just have to wait a little bit until the market turns around; choose the wrong wine and you could seriously jeopardize your social standing: "Egads! Who brought this vile rot?"

To get the help I needed, I first had to stop judging self-proclaimed wine lovers as just another version of the childhood story, The Emperor's New Clothes. "Oh my...the bouquet on this Pinot is to die for!" All that used to make me sick to my stomach until one of these connoisseurs bravely invited me to join her and her friends for some wine tasting. After only 10 minutes of trying this wine and that wine, I not only learned that it's good to have friends that know something about wine, I discovered that the emperor really does look sporty in his new getup! "Wine Boggling" is part of my "A La Art Series" and promises not to pass judgment if you happen to enjoy wine from a box.

Simi Valley Town Center selects "Pop Star" out of 400 entries for their June Calendar!

As reported in the Simi Valley Acorn Newspaper on March 20th:

Simi Valley Town Center announces the featured artists selected for inclusion in the mall's monthly calendar. More than 20,000 Simi Valley Town Center calendars are distributed to Simi Valley and Moorpark households. They are also available on-site at the mall. The glossy, fullcolor calendar highlights all Town Center events, including a monthly fine art show and sale and a weekly farmers market. The selected artwork will be featured in the interior of the calendar, and the name of the artist will be listed on the front cover.

Ten winners were chosen from more than 400 entries from throughout Southern California, including Costa Mesa, Venice Beach, South Pasadena and Santa Barbara County. Chuck Trunks of Camarillo submitted the winning entry for June. Submissions were evaluated according to appropriateness to a public venue, artistic quality of work, reproducibility and general public appeal.

TRUNKS ART Prints - Now on Bamboo Paper!

One of the drawbacks to printing reproductions on paper (as opposed to canvas) is that you can lose some of the color brightness - and my work screams for its' POP! Although canvas is always the best way to go (because it allows me to add highlights and texture), it's a good idea to offer a 'paper option.' So, I now offer my work on canvas AND paper - bamboo paper, that is.

Here's a shot of a recent print of "Round 2" on mounted bamboo paper. Notice that this type of paper doesn't diminish the bright colors at all. Sweet! In the foreground you'll see that all of my artwork comes with a certificate of authenticity (CoA) along with the associated abstract.

Another good thing about printing art on bamboo paper is that you can mount it, frame it and put that baby under glass. Looks awesome! In this shot, you see another mounted print of "Round 2" on bamboo paper. This time, it's been nicely framed by my official framer: Museum Quality Framing in Camarillo.

San Francisco's "Bay to Breakers" - May 1996

Like I've been saying all along in regards to my latest piece, "Race Day"...I spent the better part of the 90's running races all over the U.S. When I came across this photo, I thought it was a perfect reflection of "Race Day!" In this particular race, there were 80,000+ runners - seriously! And I remember that I was near the finish line when this photo was taken - and I'm still in a crowd!!
