TRUNKS ART asks, "Why is Einstein so famous??"

Boise, Idaho - January 20, 2020 - "Why is Einstein so famous?" (#3/12) - Albert Einstein is so famous that even after more than a hundred years since his astounding contributions were published, you can STILL say, "Way to go, Einstein!" in a snotty, mocking tone when some poor sap makes an innocent mistake. Max Planck, Ernest Rutherford, Niels Bohr, Werner Heisenberg and others are Mount Rushmore worthy theoretical physicists deserving of equal notoriety but you won't find their mugs (or wagging tongues) on t-shirts at Ross or T.J. Maxx.  So, what separates Einstein from this illustrious group? In 1919, a total solar eclipse proved his general theory of relativity to be correct: massive objects cause a distortion in the space-time continuum which is felt as gravity.  When the stars positioned behind the sun could be seen as Einstein predicted, he became world famous overnight and is still the only scientist to receive a ticker tape parade in New York City (1921).  So, to my hero Albert, I say (without a trace of mockery or disrespect), "Way to go, Einstein!"

I'm often asked about my process for creating these graphic compositions...

Boise, Idaho - January 4, 2020 - I'm often asked about my process for creating graphic compositions.  It's hard to explain because it's soooo unconventional (nuts) and pretty much the same since I was 8 years old.  Step 1 - create a tiny sketch in less than one minute.  Step 2 - immediately start drawing and painting without concern for background, foreground OR THE SKETCH.  Step 3 - Pull it all together in the eleventh hour after putting in 80 to 120 hours.  I included some close ups to show you how OCD I am when it comes to crisp details.  Thanks for checking out my instagram (chucktrunks) and my website!

"How Far the Stars Are" is the next astrophysics composition by TRUNKS ART!

Boise, Idaho - December 28, 2019 - "How Far the Stars Are" (#2/12) - On a clear night, our naked eye can see Sirius, the brightest star at almost 9 light years away, and Deneb, the furthest star at 1,500 light years, and even Andromeda, our closest galaxy neighbor at a whopping 2.5 million light years.  And, with telescopes like the Hubble, distances are calculated into the billions of light years!

So, just how do they know how far the stars are?  Stellar Parallax (Friedrich Bessel, 1838) is a method that uses plain old trigonometry but is limited to only 400 light years.  Standard Candles (Henrietta Leavitt, 1908) extends that distance to the far reaches of the universe using Cephied Variables (super bright twinkling stars).  But you know what's more mind blowing than these inconceivable distances?  The stars we do see are no longer there and are mere glimpses into the cosmic past.  

Yep.  Mind blown.

New Physics Art Series by TRUNKS ART: "Why is the sky dark at night?"

Boise, Idaho - December 13, 2019 - "Why is the sky dark at night?" (#1/12) - What's interesting about this seemingly pedestrian question is that it took nearly 400 years and the minds of Albert Einstein and Edwin Hubble to unravel and answer.  With an infinite number of stars in the universe we should conceivably see the entire night sky filled and lit up by starlight - but we don't.  Instead, we see only the "observable universe" which includes stars whose starlight has had time to reach us.  So if you're thinking that we'll see more and more stars in the night sky as time passes - guess again.  Thanks to a universe that is expanding at an ever increasing rate, the starlight from those distant stars will NEVER reach us.  In fact, many of the stars, including whole galaxies will fade from view leaving only the stars in our own Milky Way galaxy to inspire and perplex the far future generations of hopeful and inquisitive stargazers.

Nampa, Idaho - September 11, 2019 - "Nampa" - I like eating; and enjoying a really good cup of coffee simply goes without saying.  A 20 mile jaunt along westbound Interstate 84 from Boise will take you to restaurant-loaded Nampa, a neighboring city with a population of just over 100,000 and the distinction of being the best run city in America (WalletHub.com, July 2019)!  Wow!
