New Commission Piece: A TRUNKS ART Original!

The first thing I'm usually asked when it comes to my commission pieces is "How do you make sure that the client will be happy with the finished product?" To get things started, I normally sit down with the client and ask them questions like, "What message do you want the piece to say?" and "Do you have a preference for certain kinds of imagery?" To better understand what kind of mood they're targeting, I'll ask them about colors.

The first image you see below is the final product I created for PQC Consulting, Inc., a global consulting firm specializing in the pharmaceutical and biotech industries. They wanted an image that focused on their ability to help overseas start-ups take their discoveries from the laboratory to the marketplace.

But soon after the initial interview, I provided the client with sketches. In this case, PQC wanted a combination of the two I gave them (see the sketch image below). Lastly, before I applied color to the piece, I sat down with the client again to make sure I captured the right mood. As you can see below, the color version is pretty dramatic when compared to the black and white version.

"PQC" - The final product - framed, 24"x32" on canvas.

TRUNKS ART Recognized in Art Business News Magazine!

In the 'Picture Gallery' section of this months' edition of Art Business News Magazine, you'll see a picture from a show I did last summer. The best part of this recognition is that I'm on the same page as THE ARTIST who inspired my work - Mr. Peter Max! I had the good fortune of meeting Mr. Max in Laguna Beach back in '06 and here we meet again - what an honor!

Photo caption: Artist Chuck Trunks (center) recently exhibited his "Hopes and Dreams" series at the Old Town Studio Gallery. The opening night hosted more than 250 people. Pictured from left are Jim Brent of Museum Quality Framing Trunks and Cammie Hardy, owner and curator of the gallery.

Embellishing "Round 2" - the last piece in my Hopes and Dreams Series!

Here's a quick picture of me embellishing my latest piece, "Round 2." Of course I'm thinking about the economic mess that's effecting everybody (including artists) but my prevailing thought is, "the art must go on!" "Round 2" is a tribute to the strength and beauty of women and is being offered as a limited edition print series of 75.

New Trunks Art Release: "Round 2" Completes the Hopes and Dreams Series!

"Round 2" mixed media (ink and acrylic) on canvas. 24x32 canvas and paper prints are available. Limited edition size is set at 75.

Here's a little insight into what I was thinking when I was creating "Round 2"...

As I watch the historic U.S. presidential elections unfold and reflect on the recent summer Olympic games in Beijing, I think it’s fair to say that 2008 has proven that ‘girlie toughness’ isn’t just an endearing term from an Oscar award winning movie – it’s a real quality in many of the women that we’ve grown to appreciate and admire.

Not only did I create this composition to pay tribute to the smart, hard working and beautiful women that surround many of us, my ultimate hope is that the casual observer will pick up on the oh-so-subtle details and experience a momentary flicker of underestimation right before recalling the title of this piece. Ding! Ding! Too late…Round 2 just started.

sAs's (Stephen Sciallo) debut album, "Future Memory" features TRUNKS ART!

Here's what they're saying about sAs's debut album, "Future Memory"...This debut release by sAs (aka Stephen Sciallo) has a sonic quality quite unlike other easy listening or background music. Using commercially available loops and samples (as well as his own unique MIDI input), sAs filters everything through his imaginative approach to song structure and musical interpretation. The result is a collection of innovative and romantic compositions. From the world beat of Cerulean Sky, to the minimalistic chilliness of Rose Petals or the mysterious motif of Future Memory, sAs is highly accessible but also wonderfully familiar without being cliché.

To hear samples of sAs's music or to order his debut album, please visit his distributor's website.

"How 'bout a glass of POP STAR?"

One of the reasons why I create my brand of art is to make it available to all kinds of business owners. Yes, it's great to sell larger canvas versions of my work but I've found a lot of personal satisfaction in licensing my images too. In the associated photo, my latest work "Pop Star" can be found on a selection of Zinfandel from a local winemaker.

NEW TRUNKS ART: Embellishing "You Got A Problem?"

Here I am embellishing one of my larger works, "You Got A Problem?" I normally create my art at 24"x32" but this canvas is 32"x40". Personally, I think the larger size really works with this composition. The edition size is limited to 75.

Art Scene Article from the VC Star Newspaper...

Thousand Oaks, California: Stand out artist Chuck Trunks isn't afraid to cop to it: He watches reality television. "American Idol" is a particular favorite and, get this, the hit series served as the inspiration for one of the Camarillo artist's latest paintings, "Pop Star." "These young people pumped me up each week because when the music was cued, rather than being afraid of failing in front of a national TV audience, they had the courage to succeed," Trunks writes on his Web site, http://www.chucktrunks.com. "In the Pop Star' composition, I tried to convey a whirlwind of intrusive activity that practically engulfs our budding superstar. But instead of being swept away by the Hollywood Machine, we see an artist more focused on making her audience feel what she feels." "Pop Star" and other works by Trunks — he calls them "precision abstracts" — are on view through July 20 at Old Town Studio Gallery, 2165 Ventura Blvd., Camarillo. Also on view will be paintings by Frank Krifka, Laura Leifield, John Webster and Dominique Hannaux. Ten percent of sales from the show will benefit Concerned People for Animals. The gallery is open from noon to 5 p.m. Thursdays and Fridays, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturdays, or by appointment. Call 818-749-5598 for information.

New Release: "You Got A Problem?" Gets a Color Makeover!

Top Picture: 32" x 40" Limited Edition (75) of "You Got A Problem?" Bottom Picture: How the canvas looked prior to ink and acrylic applications.

So...what's the meaning behind "You Got A Problem?"...

I'm going to guess that the punk rock scene doesn't come to mind when you think of Raleigh, North Carolina in the mid 80's. What made this guy interesting enough to sketch while having a drink in a busy college town bar is the same reason why I brought him ‘back to life' twenty years later. Sure, he stood out amongst the former debutants and rural farm boys looking to be first generation college graduates; but, it was his obvious arrogance and dismissive glances that helped me clarify how to draw this non-conformist.

While I admire people who dare to buck fashion trends and social norms, I will take issue with those who do so in a manner that implies superiority. Can't they see that they're exhibiting the same narrow-mindedness that drives the discriminative remarks and disapproving stares that no doubt pepper their own day? To me, the challenging and combative attitude only suggests a discomfort with one's own chosen identity. And my guess is that the girls and boys from the tobacco fields and dairy farms picked up on that as well because the punk rocker didn't last long in the joint before being forced out into the damp Carolina night. I'm sure he rejoined his friends that evening with a seething account of how unfairly he was treated but I have to say he brought it on himself.

New Trunks Art: "Pop Star!"

"Pop Star" 32x24 on canvas

"Pop Star" 32x24 on canvas prior to ink and acrylic applications

What's the meaning behind "Pop Star?"...

Okay. Here goes. “Pop Star” was inspired by a reality television show. There. I said it. Sorry if I made you spill your Pinot Noir with that unseemly revelation, but I had to come clean. And to make matters worse, that inspiration came from none other than the last season of ‘American Idol.’ But as trivial and commercial as that sounds, I couldn’t help being attracted to the passion and courage of the show’s final contestants. Putting questionable guest artists and predictable show formats aside, these young people pumped me up each week because when the music was cued, rather than being afraid of failing in front of a national TV audience – they had the courage to succeed.

In the “Pop Star” composition, I tried to convey a whirlwind of intrusive activity that practically engulfs our budding superstar – but instead of being swept away by the Hollywood Machine, we see an artist more focused on making her audience feel what she feels. Two tickets, please!

Wake up to new Trunks Art: "Day Break"

"Day Break" 32"x24" limited edition giclees on canvas and paper. "Day Break" is the fifth abstract within a series of art focusing on our hope and dreams. Completion of this series is scheduled for Spring 2008. What's "Day Break" all about? Read on...

I don’t know about you but I’m feeling a little overwhelmed by the amount of depressing news that pours out of my computer, TV, radio and newspaper. If it’s not about the economy looming on the brink of a recession, it’s about an uninspiring presidential election. If it’s not about the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, it’s about the latest campus shooting rampage. At this point, ESPN is the only news I can count on – oh wait a second – there’s the whole steroids thing in front of congress right now. Man! See what I mean?

Notice how the composition doesn’t have images relating to stuffing a mattress with money and moving into a shack in the woods. That’s because “Day Break” is about the ‘other’ alternative to coping with the non-stop negative chatter: a positive attitude. I can’t stop the banks from foreclosing on people’s homes. And, I can’t force Al Gore to run for president. But I can choose to start my day with an outlook that focuses on what IS right and beautiful in this world.

Here's a piece from my 'Hopes and Dreams Series'

"Paper Doll" 24"x32" limited edition giclees on canvas and paper. "Paper Doll" is the third abstract within a series of art focusing on our hope and dreams. Completion of this series is scheduled for early 2008.

What's "Paper Doll" all about? Read on...

Sometimes (when I'm desperate enough) a movie scene can provide me with all the inspiration I need to create a new piece of art. Remember, "Show me the money!" from the Tom Cruise picture "Jerry Maguire?" Great – but this composition isn't about that. Same movie though. Instead, 'Paper Doll' stems from what a coach bound Renee Zellwegger tells her son about First Class while taxiing down the runway.

Simply put, 'Paper Doll' is about wanting to be somewhere else – and everyone knows that somewhere else is always better – right? The girl in this piece believes she can be clipped out like a paper doll and attached to a place where everything is seemingly perfect – or as Ms. Zellwegger put it, "It used to be a better seat, now it's just a better life."
